State Senator George Maziarz (R-62nd District) is blasting the New York Power Authority (NYPA) over the timing of proposed rate hikes.

NYPA wants to raise the price of electricity it sells to National Grid and New York State Electric and Gas. Maziarz testified at a public hearing in Albany today, saying this could affect all rate payers in Western New York. He also says the timing of the proposed increase is questionable, given that the state recently swept more than $500 million from NYPA into its general fund to cover expenses due to the budget crisis. NYPA says the $544 million swept for the deficit couldn't legally be used to reduce rates.
Maziarz also criticized NYPA for holding its public hearing on the increase on a Thursday morning in Albany, hundreds of miles away from the customers who will be affected.
