Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary-general, said Friday he quit the post because he was frustrated at the international community finger-pointing at the U.N. while the Syrian armed rebellion only gets deadlier.

"I continue my work, and I'm in touch with the parties, and I've been talking to quite a few foreign ministers about the issue and also in touch with the U.N. headquarters and our team on the ground so we're doing what we can and also going to make sure we assure a smooth transition."
