Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals signed defenseman
Mike Green to a three-year contract extension on Monday.
Green's new deal is worth $18.25 million, a lot of money for a player coming
off two injury-plagued seasons, during which he registered 11 goals and 31
points in 81 games. But when healthy, Green has proven himself to be one of
the top offensive-minded blueliners in the league, with a pair of 70-plus
point campaigns (2008-10).
"Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is
just entering his prime. He will continue to be a key part of our team moving
forward," said Capitals general manager George McPhee.
The 26-year-old Green has registered 82 goals and 169 assists in 398 career
games, all with the Capitals. He has added seven goals and 29 points in 50
postseason contests.
